Big In Japan – Social Tools and Services

Big In Japan, a company based out of Dallas, Texas, announced yesterday that they’re open sourcing code for several of their social media web tools. You may have heard of them before. They’re the bright minds behind Podserve, a popular podcasting tool for bloggers. Their other brag-worthy tools include FeedVault, FrankenFeed, elfURL, InstantFeed, QwikPing and SocialMail.
Good News! Most of their tools, Podserve being the exception, are now available under the GPL license, which means anyone can download and build on them for free. In exchange, you must share your work in the open source community. Big In Japan also offers a modified license option ($$$) for those who are unable to contribute their work back into to the community.
Since their recent announcement, there has been lots of positive word of mouth spreading online. This company obviously knows how to make good in the Web 2.0 and marketing space.

Thanks for the kind words!
We’re really excited to see how things go with this release. We’re as enthused as anyone to see what apps are developed, what features are added, etc.
And yes, it is about giving back. We were early on in the Ruby on Rails development, and asked tons of questions of those in the know. Hopefully this is a small part of repaying that debt! :)
Thanks for the post! This is our second major open source release at Big in japan – SimpleTicket (a ruby on rails based trouble ticket program) was the first. Check it out at http://www.simpleticket.net
